The maximum reach of the space shuttle is around 600 km (400 miles), I think. Only a tiny fraction of the distance to L2, in any case. I don't think the Ariane 5 does anything special other than being Europe's most powerful rocket, rather like the US's Delta IV. Also, for robotic spacecraft, you don't have to worry about building in fuel or propulsion systems to bring them back to Earth, so you can just use a big rocket to get it going in the right direction.
